SYLVIANE DEFERNE

The pianist Sylviane Deferne distinguished herself very early in the musical world and the press quotes «her expressive nobility, her intuition, her temperament, a sense of plasticity and an impressive instrumental technique».

This brilliant interpreter studied at the Music Conservatory in Geneva, her native city, where she obtained first prize in Virtuosity, unanimously.

Prize-winner of several international competitions, named « Soloist of the year » by the community of the Francophone Radios, her career has developed rapidly. She gives concerts in Europe, America and Asia and plays as a soloist with orchestras such as the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, l’Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal, le National Symphony Orchestra in Washington and the London Philharmonia under the baton of Charles Dutoit.

Sylviane Deferne has recorded for various labels: Decca, Musica Viva, Riche Lieu, Doron Music and Aparté. She is regularly invited as a jury member in international competitions or in high schools of music in Switzerland and France. She transmits her passion during masterclasses and to her students at the Haute Ecole de Musique in Geneva.

Since 2019, Sylviane Deferne has been artistic director of the Concerts d’Artémont.  She brings her personal vision of music, her love for historic places and nature to an audience growing regularly, developing season after season intergenerational sharing.

Her next solo album, devoted to Robert Schumann, will be recorded in April in the Music Hall of la Chaux-de-Fonds and will be released in the autumn (Aparté).


QUATOUR SINE NOMINE

After its earliest successes in 1985 at the Evian Competition and in 1987 at the Borciani Competition in Reggio Emilia, The Sine Nomine Quartet of Lausanne (Switzerland) has been pursuing an international career and appeared in concert in many European and American cities, most notably in London (Wigmore Hall), Amsterdam (Concertgebouw), New York (Carnegie Hall), Salzburg (Mozarteum), Paris (Cité de la Musique.

Widely respected artists have had an influence on the development of the quartet : after Rose Dumur Hemmerling, who passed her passion for music to the ensemble, opening the door to the great string quartet tradition, the Melos Quartet must also be mentioned. The Quartet’s work with Henri Dutilleux when recording his composition “Ainsi la Nuit” was also a milestone in the quartet’s history.

Ongoing collaboration with other musicians constantly enriches the ensemble’s perspective.  Close relationships with other string quartets have ensued over the years, including the Berlin based Vogler Quartet and the Carmina Quartet of Zürich.

The Sine Nomine Quartet has a vast repertoire, ranging from Haydn all the way to 21st century works, including rarely performed music such as the Octet Op. 7 by G. Enescu.  They have premiered many new works, some of which were dedicated to them.

The quartet’s discography is comprehensive: alongside the most important works within traditional string quartet repertoire (including the complete Schubert and Brahms quartets), they have recorded the quartets by Arriaga and Turina as well as the piano quintets by Furtwängler and Goldmark.

In 2011, the quartet founded the Festival Sine Nomine in Lausanne which is now successfully held every other year.

The ensemble receives funding from the City of Lausanne and the Canton of Vaud. Their international career has also been supported by the Association des Amis du Quatuor Sine Nomine since 1994.

Sine Nomine, meaning “without a name” is intended to symbolize the constant devotion to composers by performing their works.
